Mental Health First Aid - our MRA commitment for all Professional Coaches

There is no doubt, no doubt whatsoever, that Professional Coaching touches the boundaries of psychology, psychotherapy, counselling, a client’s broader life system, and of course their physical wellbeing and resilience.

Therefore coaching a client without any deep understanding of Mental Health is a substantial risk, and one that at MRA we believe is a risk too far.

That is why all of our Professional Coaches are qualified through Mental Health First Aid England. We have all undertaken the extensive development programme and been awarded the MHFA England certification standard – a very proud achievement for the team.

‘MHFA England deliver training using national and international research and lived experience insight. The courses are intended to increase mental health knowledge and confidence, and give people the skills to recognise signs of mental ill health’ (Adult MHFA Manual).

An absolute minimum standard for coaches must be their awareness of Mental Health key legislation and policy, especially organisation and Line Manager responsibilities as laid out in the Equality Act 2010. In the Act, Mental health conditions and mental illnesses as well as personality disorders and some self-harming behaviours are considered disabilities.

The UK Health and Safety Executive 2017 Stevenson Farmer ‘Thriving and Work’ review also offers excellent insights and recommendations for organisations, including a set of ‘core’ and ‘enhanced’ standards for best practice.

The MRA Professional Coaches now have a deep understanding of the following Mental Health conditions:

  • Depression
  • Suicide
  • Alcohol and drugs aligned to mental health
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Personality disorders
  • Eating disorders
  • Self-harm
  • Psychosis
  • Schizophrenia
  • Bipolar disorder

Our awareness of these mental health conditions allows us to support our clients experiencing acute moments of crisis, as well as those displaying early-stage symptoms. And, combined with our robust Safeguarding Policy, this level of knowledge and understanding gives our clients complete confidence that we will always operate to the very highest standards of care available.

We know our boundaries. We operate confidently within them.

We believe Mental Health awareness is a ‘must have’ for all Professional Coaches. We will always commit to this.
