Coaching demonstrations form a critical part of our Level 5, EMCC accredited Coaching qualification – Coaching with Confidence. It’s incredibly useful to observe something in practice when you’re learning a new skill and coaching is no exception! We often caveat our demonstrations with ‘coaching isn’t a spectator sport’ but we also recognise the value of being able to translate the theory into practice and to see the eight coaching competencies that underpin the programme being brought to life ahead of delegates practicing themselves. Our approach to providing these demonstrations has inevitably evolved from predominantly delivering them face to face and ‘live’ to now providing videos of all the key tools and techniques from TGROW to the Wheel of Performance amongst others.

Coaching with Confidence – Core Competencies

A critical part of our EMCC Level 5 programme is the assessment of coaching skills against these 8 core competencies. We often find that delegates can be strong in some of the competencies but find others more challenging depending on prior experience and their own preferences. For example, ‘Championing the Client’ – the high support competency, can come quite naturally to some individuals training to become professional coaches, but the high challenge competency of ‘Giving and Receiving Effective Feedback and Challenge’ can prove to be a more uncomfortable space for them to occupy. By providing multiple opportunities for delegates to practice their coaching whilst being observed by one of our expert coach-tutors, we can provide everyone with robust, constructive feedback to aid their development to become highly skilled and confident coaches and achieve the required Level 5 standard.

If you’re interested in seeing a coaching session in action to understand what coaching is and how it works, or if you’re a coach looking to refresh your memory of some of the key coaching tools and techniques then take a look here.  Do look out for the eight core competencies and, in the spirit of ‘giving and receiving effective feedback and challenge’ we’d also be interested in your likes and comments!
